the leap years
“A saint once decreed that a man must agree to a woman’s proposal today. Give me a sign, whether to meet me at eight, at the same place you sit, and fulfill the tradition of February 29.”
Bollocks.
Still i enjoyed it. If you expect something like 881 or Jack Neo's crass and rowdy movies that depict Singapore, the Leap Years is certainly something different. The cinematography enables the night scenes to look so much different from how we see them: from Chinatown, Clarke Quay and Geylang, they just look so charming and somehow romantic. This is a love story of Li Ann and Jeremy (Ananda) that plays out for three leap years. Romantic? yes. Draggy? somewhat.
still, Wong Li Lin is wonderfully refreshing in the movie. Her goofy smile and her action on screen oozes a clean slate of fresh air(at least to me). Ananda was a little wasted, somewhat like a flower vase , pretty on the outside but merely for decorative purposes. Somehow I realized I love 715's character really much coz i could relate really much to him.
The plot is simple, yet somehow executed pretty well. all in all its a good film, especially with the right company. As a local film, it stands apart from the typical dose of Singaporean movies that we have been treated to for years. I foresee more adaptations of Catherine Lims works in the future.
